It was a festival of family fun and fell running firsts at Wildboarclough May Queen Fete this Bank Holiday Monday with Buxton Juniors showing their parents how it’s done at the full on hill fest that is Shuttlingsloe Fell Race.
The 3km race goes up and back down the steep-sided hill, that is sometimes described as the ‘Matterhorn of Cheshire’, it is the third highest peak in the county with an elevation of 506 m, and commands excellent views over Cheshire. The fell race is open to ages 10 upwards and many of the Buxton juniors ran alongside their parents – although most left them well behind!
First back was Sam Soles who continues his excellent form coming second overall taking the prize for first under 23. Harry Bond came in 6th overall winning the under 17 men’s category leaving dad Rob behind! His sister Grace also had a great race coming in 70th overall – 2nd under 13 girl.
Lucy Bednall also having an outstanding season took the 1st ladies prize finishing 17th overall and beating mum Jo who also had a great run in 37th 3rd W50. Heather Wilshaw was the next Buxton junior to finish. She had a great run to come in 31st overall beating mum who finished back in 71st. She was given the U17 girls prize.
Luke Guise came in 36th overall beating mum Sarah and coming 4th under 15 boy. Sienna Phillips was next Buxton junior across the line in 49th – she took the prize for first under 15 girl. 10 year old Liam Jones ran with dad Nick to finish in a fantastic 62nd overall – 4th under 13 boy. Ava Hazelhurst whose brother Henry ran in the junior race came in 73rd – 3rd under 17 girl. 81 ran the senior race.
Three Buxton Juniors took part in the Junior race. Henry Hazelhurst running on this his 10th birthday put in a strong performance to finish 7th overall – 2nd under 11 boy. Evie Wallis worked hard to finish 14th overall – 4th under 9 girl. Making his debut for Buxton was Johnny Thompson who came in 19th – 3rd under 9 boy.
