Caz Smashes 27 Year Old Record!

A 27 year old Buxton AC Club Record was annihilated last Sunday at the Alsager 5 Mile road race by an athlete who only recently rejoined the Club after a 25 year break.

Caroline Miller (nee Pimblett) slashed a minute and a half off the 5 mile Female Vet 45 record last held by the legendary Wendy Morrison, who still holds four other Club Records at a variety of distances. Taking the 5th FV45 position out of 71 in the same category in a cracking time of 33.41, Miller was 214th from a field of almost a thousand. There is every chance that more of those records will be broken in the not too distant future!

At the same event, Samantha Willis obliterated her own 5 mile road race record by over two minutes, taking her time down to a superb 34.29. Just 2 seconds awry of her PB was Katie Rolfe, finishing in 35.58, with Pete Bailey 36.15, Emma Wentworth 38.29, Fran Ross 38.44 and Sheila Bradley 39.33 (2nd FV60).

Fifteen Buxton AC athletes, ranging from a babe in a running buggy to a talented triathlete and including both Juniors and Seniors, headed to Bakewell for the weekly Parkrun last Saturday. First up was triathlete David Fryer-Winder who, from a field of over 300, was an impressive 7th overall in a speedy 19 minutes and 25 seconds, Richard Bouglas was 14th in 20.13, while Junior Amy Whelan was 21st in 20.34 and a brilliant first in the Female 15-17 category.

Heather Fryer-Winder’s times are coming down nicely and she demonstrated this by claiming a personal best time of 25.15. Three members of the Brown family had a parkrun outing, with Florence, Jonty and mum Kate finishing within three seconds of each other, 27.34-37. Martin Hughes is maintaining his steady improvements, and came home in 29.53. Baby Hattie and mum Annabelle Mottram brought up the rear of the field, rounding up the stragglers and getting in valuable Parkrun experience at an early age!

At Lyme Park, Junior Will Longden had a clear win over the rest of the field, with a fantastic first place over the hilly course in 19.20. Sister Grace fared well too, with a great 19th finishing position in 24.22.

Next Saturday sees the return of the immensely popular Pavilion Gardens 5K. This free event is open to all-comers (under 10s to be accompanied by an adult), and starts at 9am on Broad Walk. For more details, see buxtonac.org.uk.
