Buxton AC Runners Sizzle!

Brassington Hill Race doesn’t attempt to disguise the fact that there are hills aplenty to challenge the competitors, and the race starts as it means to go on with a steep climb through the village streets before heading to the beautiful hills around this lovely Peak District village.

Always held during the annual Wakes Week, the 4.75 mile race is a stunning tour taking in the rocky outcrop of Harboro Rocks, then follows the undulating Carsington Pastures before an exciting tumble back to the finish, but not before adding a sneaky little climb just before the finish line.

Six Buxton runners joined the 160 competitors for this popular event, and yet again a Junior left the Seniors well in the shade. Harry Bond was not only 1st Junior home but took a fantastic 6th place in the race, well deserved. Kev Mottram was next home in 70th position (42.35), while Sheila Bradley claimed 1st Female Over 60 position once again, 101st overall (45.14). Tim Rolfe returned a time of 50.17 in 119th, while Jenny Light and Charlie Narejko came home together in 156th and 157th respectively, 103.20 and 103.28.

On the same blistering evening, with temperatures almost 30 degrees, the Decathlon Sale Sizzler 5K was the race of choice for two Buxtonians. Almost 500 runners took part in the event and no wonder with the great personal best potential given the speedy course. Rob White ran a sizzling 16.40, finishing in a cracking 20th place, while Terry Fowler sped home in 20.24, 157th.

Tania Wilson was the sole Club representative at the Stoney Middleton Fell Race that same scorching night, and out of 188 runners was a creditable 88th place in a time of 49.07, which given the extremely hilly race profile, was a fine effort.

“Team Rolfe”, consisting of mum Katie, dad Tim and son Matthew, tested out the course of the very first Parkrun at the weekend, the hugely popular Bushy Park in London, where almost 1,000 runners congregate every Saturday morning to run the 5K route. Katie ran a fine 23.40 (187th), followed by 11 year old Matthew who stormed home in 26.05 (327th) and close behind was Tim in 26.10 (332nd).
