Wednesday saw the ever popular Herod Farm Fell Race is the traditional first mid-week local fell race. The race is a tough category A race covering 1100ft of climb over it’s 4 mile length. The route starts on a track off Primrose Lane and continues through Herod Farm, from where it descends towards Simmondley. After dashing through fields the race begins in earnest, climbing up the face of the “Nab”. Finally, athletes retrace their route back down via the farm track to the finish.
The race was first held in 1989 and is hosted by Glossopdale Harriers. The 2016 winner receiving the Stella Judd Memorial Shield was Buxton AC Helen Thornhill and this year Helen came second lady overall, first under 23 girl, Helen finished 12th overall. Buxton’s David Fryer-Winder finished 23rd – 3rd under 23 and George Smedley-Castle came in 44th overall – 5th under 23.
Elliott Meylan had a good run to finished 26th overall – 2nd under 18 boy. Taking part in her first adult fell race 14 year old Heather Wilshaw, put in a strong performance to finish an outstanding 53rd over winning the under 18 girls category. 110 runners took part.
Both Helen and Heather were part of the ladies team, along with V50 winner Jo Bednall, to win the senior ladies team prize for Buxton AC.
